Measuring a Life in Love
Kyle Avila’s legacy of faith, hope and unconditional love
Diagnosed with mitochondrial disease at just three years old, Kyle Paul Avila defied expectations, radiating joy, laughter and warmth to everyone around him. His life journey, spanning decades rather than the few years initially predicted, was made possible by the tireless dedication of his parents, Paul and Monica Avila, and the compassionate care he received at Providence Mission Hospital.
Paul and Monica were committed to ensuring that every day was filled with joy and comfort for their son. They embraced their role as Kyle’s caregivers with a deep sense of fulfillment. His sister, Courtney, also shared in the care and love that defined Kyle’s life.
Every day a blessing
Providence Mission Hospital became a second home for the Avila family. Over the years, Kyle’s physicians, nurses and therapists learned about his rare disease and were transformed by his spirit. They saw in Kyle something beyond his medical condition — a human being who radiated love and taught everyone who met him valuable lessons about patience, perseverance and faith.
“Kyle taught us that every day is a blessing, no matter the challenges,” says Providence Mission Hospital internist Eric O. Benner, M.D. “He showed us that love has no boundaries, and hope is something you never give up on.”
Kyle’s impact on the hospital and the surrounding community was profound. Despite being unable to speak or move independently, his infectious laughter, heartwarming smile and boundless energy were a source of inspiration. Physicians who worked with Kyle often noted that his case was not just a medical challenge but a spiritual journey.
“Kyle didn’t fit neatly into any textbook,” says Michael J. Santoro, M.D., a gastroenterologist at Providence Mission Hospital. “But he reminded us that every patient is unique, and sometimes the most important thing we can do is listen, learn and have hope.”
The Providence Mission Hospital team went above and beyond in their care for Kyle. From ensuring that his hospital room was a peaceful, quiet place to embracing new treatment methods that pushed the boundaries of conventional care, the hospital’s staff exemplified the mission of caring for all.
“It is too long of a list to capture how many caregivers were absolutely amazing through our family’s journey,” says Monica. “We are grateful for each of them, especially Dr. Reza Dehkordi who guided us through the most emotional transition.”
Kyle lives in our hearts
In the end, Kyle’s life was not measured by the limitations of his body but by the limitless love he gave and received. His passing in May 2024 at age 33 was marked by a funeral attended by nearly 700 people, a testament to the countless lives he touched. “He was a miracle,” says Monica. “He taught us all about unconditional love, and his legacy will live on in the hearts of everyone who knew him.”
