Paying Attention to What’s Needed

Cathy and Rich Hubbell don’t wait to be asked, they jump in and help

Spend even a few minutes with Cathy and Rich Hubbell and you understand why their impact has been so meaningful. Cathy is thoughtful and steady, someone who sees what needs to be done and simply gets to work. Rich has a twinkle in his eye that reflects both a deep appreciation for life and the couple’s shared heart for giving back.

Together, the Hubbells have spent more than 20 years supporting Providence Mission Hospital through Cathy’s dedicated volunteer service and a series of thoughtful gifts that have touched nearly every corner of the hospital. A constant presence in the auxiliary, Cathy has supported every campaign and played a hands-on role in identifying opportunities to improve care.

Giving with intention
Cathy and Rich focus their philanthropy on areas where they can see the impact of their generosity, from supporting the emergency department and infusion center to making a major gift to advance cardiac care. Often, their giving begins with Cathy noticing a need. When she saw outdated wheelchairs, they replaced them. And when new breast cancer technology became available, they stepped forward to help bring it to patients.

Their most recent gift was shaped by something more personal. After experiencing severe back pain, Rich found himself at the hospital searching for answers. It was there that he connected with spine surgeon Brian Hwang, M.D. Within days, Rich underwent a procedure that brought him from debilitating pain
to complete relief.

That experience stayed with them, and Cathy and Rich chose to make a significant gift to advance the program. “Dr. Hwang is a remarkable person,” says Rich. “He’s innovative, he’s thoughtful and he genuinely cares about his patients.”

The couple remains as committed as ever to supporting the hospital and encouraging others to get involved. “You don’t have to do everything,” Cathy says. “But you can do something. And when you do, you become part of it.”

The Hubbells look for ways to help where it’s needed. “What makes Cathy and Rich so special is how intentional they are,” says Seth Teigen, chief executive. “They pay attention, they ask good questions and they step in to make a real difference.”
