“The impact this will have on every patient and family that seeks medical care in our Emergency Department is incredible.”
Emergency care enhancements funded through community support
Laguna Beach
In 2016, Mission Hospital embarked on a vital fundraising initiative to expand the Emergency Departments at both locations: Laguna Beach and Mission Viejo. By 2019, the five-phase expansion and restoration of the Sue and Bill Gross Emergency Department at Mission Hospital Laguna Beach was completed.
The project expanded the Emergency Department by 30 percent, allowing the addition of a brand new triage space, conference room, six examination rooms, and four upright observation chairs. Additionally, the total bed count increased to 20, which helps patient flow and decreases wait times. Among the many benefits created through the renovation, the project allowed an opportunity for remodeling multiple areas, including the waiting room and reception area, the airborne infection isolation room, and the staff lounge. The $12.5 million project was fully funded by the Sue and Bill Gross Family Foundation and other generous members of our community.
Mission Viejo
The 2019 Mission Hospital’s Holiday Gala, “Beyond the Limits,” raised nearly $3 million for this vital initiative and was co-chaired by Dr. Matthew Kaplan, medical director of Emergency Services at Mission Hospital, and George O’Connell.
“We cannot be more grateful to everyone that has supported the Emergency Department expansion at Mission Hospital. The impact this will have on every patient and family that seeks medical care in our Emergency Department is incredible,” says Dr. Kaplan.
With the Laguna Beach Emergency Department expansion and restoration completed, Mission Hospital’s Mission Viejo location is expected to begin construction on their Emergency Department expansion in early 2021. With our community’s philanthropic passion and support, the three phase project for the Emergency Department at Mission Viejo will expand and improve the current facility, increase bed counts, and enhance triage capabilities in order to meet the needs of our growing community.
